First edition of the grammatical work by Thomas Magister, a Byzantine grammarian also known as Theodoulos of the times of Andronikos II Palaiologos (1282-1328).The full title is Ἐκλογὴ ὀνομάτων καὶ ρημάτων Ἀττικῶν, composed in alphabetical order and Phrynichus, Moeris and others as sources. The edition is complemented by his notes and commentaries, demonstrating the breadth of Magister’s scholarship. The book was printed without the sponsorship of C. Benigni, in contrast to the Pindar and Theocritus; the title page is ornamented with Kallierges’s printer’s mark and it is dedicated to the ambassador of Portugal to Rome Michael Sylvius, who had responded to Kallierges’s appeal for financial support in his efforts to disseminate Greek letters, wherein in fact he calls him a ‘philhelene’.
